Monumentum II Seeing Light
May 25th 2007 / 11:12 PM Völkerschlachtdenkmal Leipzig
The largest memorial of Europe was inaugurated at October 18th 1913 to remind of the battle of Leipzig in 1813. With its height of 91 metres and its massive architecture there is almost no comparable building and it is hard to resist the immense impression when facing it.
However, the perception of visitors is ambivalent. Besides dignity and commemoration, every building is also bearer of the prevailing political zeitgeist.
From the beginning the monument was fascinating by its noticeable spiritual strength. The touching aura of the monumental is undeniable.
The grand opening of the 16th Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig will become a unique synthesis of light and sound which will stress the extraordinary architecture and atmosphere in an artistic way.
The English band „In the Nursery“ which is long since known for its ambitious compositions at the border between classic and electronic music has created an own soundtrack especially for this purpose. This music is based on prominent themes out of the works of Richard Wagner (then monument was inaugurated in his 100th year of birth), Gustav Mahler, Franz Liszt and Edvard Grieg. All of them have a very special relation to Leipzig. Their compositions were woven into a new entity by the brothers Klive and Nigel Humberstone in their very special own style - the brothers will perform live at this evening.
The contour, plains and structures of the monument will be traced by light with a complex arrangement of illumination which was never seen before. By that, the monument is gradually released out of the dark and quasi aroused to life.
The aesthetic lines of effect and architectonic fields of force will get visible and will become extended into space. The historic and mythic symbolism of the monument will appear literally in a fascinating, new light.
It will be an opportunity for the spectator to reflect on the history of the monument, the region and the country, in whose context the monument should be seen. An opportunity to think about pathos and dignity, about general values which the monument stands for and about the role of these values in our time.
Monumentum II will provide an unforgettable artistic performance to the residents of Leipzig, who have been a friendly and tolerant host since 15 years and of course to the guests of the Wave-Gotik-Treffen from all over the world.
The entrance is free for all.
